    Harmonics Analysis Tutorial

    Wednesday, November 20, 2019 |

The separation of imperfections on round components into their circular frequencies, or “harmonics” is crucial to the analysis of what caused them. In this tutorial Dr Mike Mills - Chief Metrologist - discusses the basis and use of harmonic analysis.

What is Roundness | Methods of Roundness Measurement in Metrology

    Tuesday, October 29, 2019 |

The measurement of roundness is of critical importance for many applications. There are several different measurement methods from simple caliper measurements to highly accurate dedicated roundness measurement systems. In this article, Dr. Mike Mills – Chief Metrologist – outlines some of the methods and their limitations.

What is Surface Roughness | Roughness Measurement Overview

    Friday, October 4, 2019 |

In many applications, surface roughness is closely allied to function, for instance where two surfaces are in close moving contact with each other their surface roughness will affect their sealing or wear properties. This might suggest that it is a case of "the smoother the better", but this is not always true as other factors may be involved. Where lubrication is involved it has been found that roughness valleys are required to hold oil. Also, the financial aspect must be considered: it costs a lot of money to produce very smooth surfaces and the expense of this exercise can add to the bill considerably without gaining a great deal of performance.

  • Assessing the Surface Metrology of Orthopaedic Implants

    Monday, October 22, 2018 |

Surgical implants represent some of the greatest steps forward in medical innovation of the last century. Orthopaedic surgeons routinely custom-build medical implants to replace missing joints or bones in the skeletal structures of patients. Dental implants comprised of artificial veneer material and a false, titanium root are increasingly commonplace. Cardiothoracic surgeons can replace damaged or diseased tissue in the human heart and implant false heart valves with life-saving ramifications.

What Is Form Measurement in Metrology?

    Monday, October 8, 2018 |

Form measurement is conducted to determine the overall shape of an object under test, which may refer to its flatness, straightness, parallelism, roundness, or cylindricity. This is critical for ensuring that the component will fit in the end-product application, which is in turn key for ensuring product performance and maintaining customer satisfaction.

Form, roughness, and topography are most commonly measured using contact metrology instruments, which acquire surface profiles by moving a sensitive stylus across the measured component in a pre-defined direction. A diamond tip with micrometre (μm) dimensions acquires variations in resistance to applied pressure, but this is typically limited to variations across a single plane.

Surface profilers are used to measure and characterize the surface features of material on the micro-and nanoscale. These minute topographical features are typically categorized as roughness, waviness, or directional lay, representing potentially microscopic structure superimposed on the true form of a material’s substrate.

  • What are Precision Microptic Clinometers?

    Wednesday, August 8, 2018 |

A clinometer is an optical device designed to measure the angular profiles of a surface against a vertical or horizontal reference. This enables precision measurement of surface elevation, depression, and tilt which are fundamental properties for successful leveling and alignment of components.
