09/11/09 Talyrond 385 with Motorized Gauge Head
Following the successful launch of its Talyrond 365 roundness measuring machine, Taylor Hobson was pressed to design something even better; something bigger, faster, more accurate, more automated and still affordable. Renowned for its record of "firsts" in the precision measurement industry, the company has responded with the Talyrond 385, a completely automatic cylindrical geometry measuring system.
True cylindrical geometry inspection frequently requires the combining of internal and external, vertical and horizontal features. Until now that called for the not-so-automatic intervention of an operator to manually reposition the gauge head. With the Talyrond 385 and its motorized, programmable gauging arm, repositioning from ID to OD or from flat to round surfaces is completely automatic. That not only saves time it also eliminates a potential cause of measurement error and non-repeatability.
An automatic centre and levelling table is standard with the Talyrond 385. A true heavyweight, this table handles parts up to 450mm in diameter and up to 75 kg of weight. The table runs on a bi-directional spindle that can be positioned to any angle with an accuracy of +/- 0.2 degrees. This ensures that measurements of parallelism or taper for example are accurately performed and geometrically correct. Rotational speed is selectable from 0.6, 1, 2, 6 or 10 rpm enabling spindle speed to be matched to workpiece diameter and radial accuracy is +/- 0.02µm for an outstanding combination of high throughput and precision.
Tall parts are no problem for the Talyrond 385 - systems are available with measuring height of 300mm, 500mm or 900mm. Deviation from straightness is less than 0.3µm over the entire length of the 300 and 500mm versions. Positioning speed from bottom to top of the rigid, cast iron column is extremely fast at 20mm/sec which greatly reduces overall cycle time on large components. High positioning accuracy assures that the machine stops where it is programmed to stop from part to part, operator to operator and shift to shift; measurement repeatability has never been better or more reliable.
The horizontal axis of the Talyrond 385 is available as either a positioning axis or a measuring axis. With both versions the total travel is 200mm with a generous 25mm of travel over center and the positioning speed is 15mm/second. If true horizontal straightness or perpendicularity measurements are indicated on the part print the Talyrond 385 RSU (radial straightness unit) is recommended. This version has a ceramic horizontal beam that delivers straightness deviation less than 0.25µm over the entire 200mm of travel.
